Harden Your Social Media Presence
Before you launch into the digital day, run through this quick pre-flight checklist. Just like checking your gear before a mission, these steps will help you maintain optimal situational awareness and security on your social media platforms.
Phase 1: Your Profile & Public Face (The "Visual Recon")
- Profile Picture Audit: Is your profile picture professional or at least neutral? Avoid pictures that clearly show your home, car license plate, expensive possessions, or uniform.
- Bio/About Section Scrub: Does your bio reveal too much personal info (e.g., full employer name, specific hobbies that pinpoint location, political leanings that attract conflict)? Less is more.
- Privacy Settings Lockdown:
- Private by Default: Are all your accounts set to "Private" or "Friends Only" as the default? This is your primary defensive perimeter.
- Post Visibility: For any public posts, do they truly need to be seen by everyone? Double-check individual post privacy.
- Story/Reel Visibility: Are your stories and reels only visible to your approved audience?
- Location Services: Are location services for the social media apps turned OFF on your device?
- Friend/Follower Review: Have you reviewed your friend/follower list recently? Do you know (or at least recognize) everyone who has access to your content? Remove suspicious or unknown accounts.
Phase 2: Content & Posting Habits (The "Intel Brief")
- Geotagging Disabled: Is geotagging completely disabled for all photos and videos you upload to social media? (Check both the app settings AND your device camera settings).
- The 24-Hour Rule Applied: Did you wait at least 24 hours after leaving a location before posting about it? (Applies to vacations, events, unique restaurants, etc.)
- Background Check: Before posting a photo or video, take a moment to look at the background. Are there any visible details that could compromise your privacy (mail, keys, calendars, street signs, specific landmarks near your home, valuable items)?
- Pattern Disruption: Are you intentionally varying your posting times and the types of content you share to avoid creating predictable routines?
- Sensitive Info Avoidance: Are you refraining from sharing details about your work schedule, travel plans, children's school activities, or medical appointments?
- Quiz/Survey Discretion: Did you avoid participating in those "fun" quizzes or surveys that ask for your first car, mother's maiden name, or pet's name? (These are often used for security question harvesting).
Phase 3: Digital Interactions (The "Engagement Rules")
- Link Scrutiny: Do you hover over (or long-press) unfamiliar links before clicking them to see the actual URL?
- Message Verification: Do you verify the identity of unexpected or suspicious messages, especially if they ask for personal information or urgent action?
- "Friend Request" Protocol: Do you only accept friend/follow requests from people you genuinely know and recognize?
- Comment Section Awareness: Are you aware of what you're saying in public comment sections? Could your words be misinterpreted, used against you, or draw unwanted attention?
- Information Reciprocity: Are you careful about how much information you reveal in direct messages or group chats, even with people you trust?
Remember, every piece of information you put out there is a potential data point for someone with ill intent. By running through this Digital Pre-Flight Checklist, you're not just being safe; you're being a smarter, harder-to-target warrior in the digital realm.
Stay vigilant, stay secure!
In my next article, I'll take some of the Phase 2 elements and talk about some of the ways to become a Gray Man online.
